College Baseball Pitcher Shares His PRP Patient Experience for Rotator Cuff Tear

Patients from all over the world are starting to use PRP Treatments to help with injuries.  We have another patient experience below.  This one is from a college baseball pitcher who had a rotator cuff tear injury.  Enjoy!

What was your injury that was treated with prp?

3-4mm cyst caused by tears in my rotator cuff. (Baseball-College-Pitcher)

Why did your physician decide to utilize prp for this injury?

As an alternative to surgery

What medical facility did your physician perform this treatment? Hospital? Physician clinic?

His own clinic. (Hand and Shoulder Center)

Did your physician have you follow a specific protocol the night before your prp treatment?

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before

Do you remember how much blood was drawn from you? After they drew the blood, how long did you have to wait before the platelet rich plasma was ready for use on your injury?

About the same amount as a normal blood draw, and I only waited about 5 minutes

What did the physician do to prepare the injury site for injection?

Cleaned and sanitized the area, mark the injection site with a pen, and spray the area with freezing spray for the skin.

Did the physician use ultrasound as a guide to place the platelet rich plasma?

No. He pushed on my shoulder to find my pain.

How did the injection feel? Explain. And do you remember how long the prp treatment took? If you had pain, how long did the pain last? Any swelling?

I didn’t feel the needle go in at first, but it was kind of painful and uncomfortable as he pushed the needle through. The actual treatment took maybe 15 min max. I’ve had pain for pretty much all of the two days after the injection. No swelling.

How long did the entire visit take?

Close to 3 hours. (I was fit in between surgeries)

After treatment, did your physician wrap the treatment site? If not, what did he do post treatment?

Held a gauze to it, put a band-aid on it. and had the nurse apply ice for 20 min.

What was your physicians post prp treatment protocol for you? Restrictions? Rest? Exercise? Stretching? Pain medication? Any specific directions you had to follow?

Rest for two weeks, start my rehab program. Don’t take any anti-inflamatories, only tylenol.

How much was the prp treatment?

My 10% co-pay was around $160.

Did your insurance pay for the injection?

Yes, except for the 10% copayment

Other comments or thoughts about your prp experierence?

It’s well worth the try before having surgery. I’ve heard nothing but positive results about it.
